This is the brother of the well known Maxwell market curry rice, and he is currently operating at Redhill market.
While the Maxwell version has modernise it’s curry, this one still adheres to an old school taste. The curry is lighter and is not mixed with a soya gravy. Yet, it is still flavourful with an alluring curry fragrance.
His kong ba and pork chops are what we enjoy the most. The former is braised until tender and meat that can be easily pulled. The pork chops are dusted with soda crackers crumbs for that almost buttery tasting crust, and crispy too.
Both of these also have a distinctive red colour, suggesting a use of fermented bean curd. The large pork balls are also a delight, well seasoned and delicious with a light clear sauce.
This and the Whampoa curry rice are the ones that still retain this old school taste, and very different from the more popular scissors cut type you find in most places.
Their prices are also very cheap as they cater to mostly the elderly crowd here. And that’s why most of the food here is light, tender and easy on the palate.
While it may not be for everyone, those of us that grew up eating curry rice from an earlier era will find this nostalgic and comforting.
