Selera Famous Chicken Curry Puff With Video

In the first of silverchef's Double Puff Feature, we are going to touch on Selegie's Selera Curry Puff, just opposite Rex Cinema.

This has been one of the classic curry puff stalls in Singapore, and for those who still swear by Old Chang Kee, this is one you should check out.

Situated in a corner side coffee stall, it has a very modest and humble surrounding, resembling any coffeeshop you see in your neighbourhood.

Much like the more widely known Old Chang Kee franchise, Selera offers other deep fried goodies. Their curry puffs also offer 3 distinct flavors, namely chicken, mutton and the very exotic sardine puffs!

Chicken, Mutton and Sardine Curry Puffs

We were game to try all 3 puffs and apart from the chicken puff, the other 2 had a very similar floury outer crust to the Old Chang Kee variant. The chicken puff seemed to have a more pimply fried crust instead.

Tempting looking filling

Breaking open the chicken puff, we were greeted with a delicious texture of chicken curry filling, potatoes and the standard egg bit. The filling was more moist and less processed tasting than Old Chang Kee's, but it was highly spicy as well.

The mutton puff had a similar curry flavor and had the distinctive mutton flavor to it, which will turn off Pauline no end! But it was the sardine that was the most intriguing, and I believe it is an acquired taste.

It has a mostly tomato base filling, and the chunky bits of sardine did have a very tangy and acidic taste to it. But having a few bites, I must admit I did rather like how the tangy flavor balances off the rich buttery crust.

Wide selection of deep fried items

In all, it is definitely a cut above the far too commercialised Old Chang Kee puffs, and the variety of flavors is a refreshing change. The chicken curry puff is the star here, and the crust itself is more to the classic puff pastry with its more crisp look and taste.

Whether it is the best curry puff is subjective as everyone has their own preference when it comes to this delightful delicacy.
