Shokudo Japanese Coffee House With Video

In recent years, there has been an increasing number of new Japanese cafes that specialises in western fare, especially Italian pastas and pizzas.

I remember a few years back, I used to frequent Waraku Pasta in Clarke Quay Central, and back then, it was very packed and had a novelty feel about it.

Sole Pomodoro With Video

I was privileged to be invited along for a pizza tasting session at Sole Pomodoro over last weekend, and this was quite a new pizza place located at Mackenzie Road, just off Selegie Road.

It is owned by two very passionate Italians who are very proud of their pizzas and how they actually make them. The place itself is a refurbished kopitiam, but made to look more like an Italian alfresco cafe.

Grandma's At Nex With Video

I have always walked past Grandma's in town, but just never really got around to patronising it. And it is only when I was at the newly opened Serangoon Nex that I finally had my first taste of Grandma's.

At Nex, there is really a wide choice of eateries found on almost every floor of this huge complex. We happened to decide to venture into this rather well known home styled restaurant.

Best And Top 10 Singapore Hawker Dishes

Since my last best of list on hawker food back in January, I had been wanting to compile another best of Singapore hawker dishes, but decided to hold off as I kept on discovering great new hawker stalls.

Like all of my lists, this list is also subjective and based solely on my own opinions and taste. I am sure, there are many great hawker dishes that will be equally deserving, but I have decided to come up with my 10 personal faves.

Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh With Video

It's been awhile since I last posted a bak kut teh blog, and it was just appropriate when one of my friends decided to bring me to the popular Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh for the first time.

It is situated at Rangoon Road and is found in a very unusual corner of an industrial building. Not really the sort of place you will think of finding notable eateries.

Rubato With Video

2012 Latest update: Chef Peter has moved on and started his own restaurant called Pietro at Jalan Kelulut.

Pauline came home one night with a very excited look on her face, and this was due to the fact that she had just discovered a delightful new Italian restaurant near her workplace.

Rubato was the simple name of this place, and it is run and owned by a very young yet remarkable young man by the name of Marcus. It is located within Jalan Peminpin, just about 10 minutes walk from Marymount MRT.

Kok Kee Wanton Noodle With Video

After going to 51 Kovan Wanton Noodle, winekaki was anxious to bring me to his personal favorite wanton noodle place, found in Lavender Food Market.

Kok Kee Wanton Noodle is run by an elderly couple, and has been quite notable. This was pretty much endorsed by the fact that there was always a queue when we were there during the off peak hours of 3pm in the afternoon.

Punggol Noodles In Kovan With Video

I have long heard of this very remarkable noodle place in Kovan called Punggol Noodles, and had been waiting to try their noted meatball noodles for quite some time now.

Unfortunately, their business is so good that they usually close after lunch, which means we had to get there very early one weekend just to savor this noodle delicacy.

51 Kovan Market Ming Fa Wanton Egg Noodle With Video

We had a chance to try out this very popular wanton mee stall in Kovan Food Market just yesterday morning, and boy, was it really popular! The queue was just amazing!

Bobcat informed us that there were actually 2 very good wanton noodle stalls here, and the other was very nearby found just a couple of stalls away at no. 57.

Xin Yang Thai Food in Woodlands

Winekaki who lives in Woodlands has always been asking me to try out this quaint little Thai stall situated on a 2nd floor of a food court there, and I had never been able to do so until last week.

On the evening that we were there, and despite a heavy downpour outside, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this stall was attracting quite a large queue. Larger than the zhe char stall next door.

A Silver Valentine - Valentine's Day 2011

Although we have been together for many years, we have always celebrated Valentine's Day one way or another. And in our younger, more gullible years, we have always gone out to restaurants on this day.

In recent years, perhaps due to work, and also due to the realisation that V-Day can be very commercialised, we have veered towards simpler meals to celebrate.

Bobcat PhD, Persistent Hawker Detective

Today, I am taking a break from the usual food posts, and would really like to acknowledge someone who has been very influential to this blog.

And that person is none other than Bobcat, who is really one of the best resources for hawker food in Singapore.

Futhermore, he is also someone who has a great palette and has a great affinity with people.

Jiang Ji Traditional Hainanese Chicken Rice 江记 With Video - The Best Chicken Rice

There are very few certainties in life, and what's more, there are very few definitive hawker food out there that can stand head and shoulder above their every competitor.

So, when it comes to our beloved chicken rice, there has always been great debate on who is the best in town. Wee Nam Kee, Boon Tong Kee, Kampong Chicken, Tian Tian, 5 Star etc, the list is endless.

Poh Kee Satay at Hougang 212

Our good friend and resourceful foodie, Bobcat introduced us to this quaint little satay stall in a Hougang coffee shop one weekend, and I was unable to go try this out, until now.

Winekaki and I were having our Ri Yi beef noodles and I remembered Bobcat telling me to try this out at night as they only operate at night. And boy, was it a worthwhile visit!

Hawaiian Puff From Pie Connection

Pauline and I were very privileged this morning to get a taste of Pie Connection's very special and exclusive Hawaiian puff and boy, was it really special!

This puff was done as a one-off by special request for one of their customer, and as such, it is akin to a limited edition of sorts. Nevertheless, here is our thoughts on this puff.

Shrimp Bisque

A happy and prosperous new year to everyone! And what better way to celebrate this new year than with a new recipe.

This was something I did on new year's day and it is a favorite of my mum-in-law's as well, as she devoured it almost in no time!

Uncle Kun Lunar New Year Goodies 根叔年糕 With Video

Seeing that Lunar New Year is just around the corner, I thought The Silver Chef should do a blog on something relating to the festive season.

And what better way to do this post than to talk about Uncle Kun's special Lunar New Year Goodies, which is only available until the eve of Chinese New Year.

Caffe Vivo at Pavillion Kuala Lumpur With Video

Within the vast confines of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, there seems to be a number of choices for Italian fare, and we decided to try out Caffe Vivo on the uppermost level on a Saturday afternoon.

Indeed, Caffe Vivo did have the classic Italian furnishings and did feel quite cosy and comfortable. The staff were, however, a mixed bag.

Straits Chinese Nonya Restaurant With Video - Classic Nyonya Cooking in 313 Somerset

It is always hard to find nyonya food in the mainstream, and apart from Ivins which has a number of outlets in various parts of the island, it is hardly easy to find peranakan food in town.

So, it was with great curiosity when we spotted this nyonya outlet right in the middle of a food court in 313 Somerset. We had put off a few times trying it simply because of the price, which was hardly food court standards.

Butter Wine Poached Ribeye

It was one of those weekends where we realised that we had a couple of ribeye steaks still in the freezer, that had been there for about a fortnight.

Those steaks were really thick and huge, and it was one of those times that one had to improvise to get yourself a really decent meal, otherwise you would have ended up with badly undercooked steaks.

Old Town White Coffee With Video

It is ironic that despite having some outlets here in Singapore, that we only finally got to visit an Old Town White Coffee outlet in Kuala Lumpur during one of our lunch breaks there.

This particular outlet is situated in the heart of Central Market, and every Old Town White Coffee outlet has that old kopitiam charm about it, albeit in air conditioned surroundings.

The Handburger at 313 Somerset

It's been awhile since we had a good burger, and my previous post on the Fergburger did prove to be one of my most read posts. So, we decided to head to 313's The Handburger place to try it out.

We had heard so much about this gourmet burger joint, and had previously walked past this place many times during our shopping stints in 313.

Shook! at Starhill Gallery With Video

Opposite of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, we also discovered this very posh and luxurious shopping mall called Starhill Gallery, which houses all the famous brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel.

With such a classy surrounding, it was only fitting that we had a great dining experience there, and we found exactly just that in the Feast Village located on the basement of this marvelous mall.

The Loaf at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur With Video

While in Kuala Lumpur, we were looking around for a good breakfast place one morning, and while most shops were still closed at Pavilion, there was this posh looking bakery that caught our eye.

The Loaf is situated very near the main entrance to Pavilion and is a very nice looking cafe and bakery, with some alfresco seating area and some bench seating inside.

Sweeter One - Pavilion Kuala Lumpur At Bukit Bintang With Video

In movies, sequels rarely match up to the original, but I am hoping that my follow up to my original video of my sweet Pauline doing her shopping adventures will be even better.

We had the chance to be in Kuala Lumpur over the past weekend for a friend's wedding, and we certainly did not want to miss the opportunity to shop and shoot at the same time.

Bishan Toast Box At Junction 8 With Video

Living in Bishan, Pauline and myself have a tendency to walk to Junction 8 shopping mall for our weekend breakfast meals, and we would regularly end up eating toast and eggs with our coffee and tea.

Up until recently, Toast Box had been operating in one corner of Junction 8, but just a month or so back, they have occupied a new 2 storey building just next to the MRT train station.

Prosperous Lim (Fu Lin Tou Fu Yuen) 福林豆腐园 At Siglap East Coast Road With Video

I have never had a specific fondness for niang tou fu all my life, but when my friend Liong Hai brought me to this Siglap outlet one lunchtime, I was immediately hooked.

Prosperous Lim, or Fu Lin Tou Fu Yuen 福林豆腐园 has a rather unique style of making this classic hawker fare. And they use a very gorgeous minced meat sauce.

The End Of Char Kway Teow

I recently had the opportunity to obtain a copy of Leslie Tay's new book, The End of Char Kway Teow and had him personally autographed it.

This is a very fascinating read as many of you would know, the book is an encapsulation of his popular blog, ieatishootipost.

Fragrant Pavillion Tea Hut 满庭香 With Video - Classic Taiwan Bubble Tea, Snacks And Delicacies

Back in the early 90's, there was this huge craze and following for Taiwan bubble tea. And this was long before bubble tea became so commercialised as it is now.

During that time, there were a number of dedicated bubble tea huts catering to the teenager masses who would flock to such places to relax and chat for hours on end.

Kovan Ri Yi Beef Noodles With Video

After my post on Hock Lam Beef Kway Teow, there were a number of readers who singled out to me that there were far better beef noodles around our island.

My attention was thus brought to this very inconspicuous stall tucked away in one corner in the heart of Kovan and Hougang, in a coffeeshop that was rather quiet for that afternoon.

Uncle Kun Delicacies (Gen Shu Mei Shi Shi Jia 根叔美食世家) With Video

I had heard so much about Uncle Kun for sometime now, and when Bobcat asked me along one weekend afternoon to visit his stall, I simply could not refuse.

Armed with winekaki as my sidekick for that day, we visited Uncle Kun's vibrant stall in Toa Payoh Vista Market and from the onset, there was a visible long queue waiting to lap up his delicacies.

Wild Honey In Mandarin Gallery

Wild Honey was always one of those places that drew our curiosity, simply because every time we pass by it, there is always a long queue.

Pauline wanted to try this place out and eventually, we went on a Friday and was asked to wait for at least half an hour for a table.

Hopetoun Tea Rooms On Collins Street In Melbourne

This is the first of my Melbourne food reviews, and I have elected to go with our most favourite place, the lavish and opulent Hopetoun Tea Rooms.

Found in the equally historical looking Block Arcade on Collins St, this is a great reminder of the wonderful English tea rooms of the past.

Best and Top 10 Singapore Hawker Food

Putting together this list of the best Singapore hawker food stalls was quite a challenge, as there was so much to choose from, and so many that had to be left out.

Again, this is list is subjective and is debatable but this is the fun of doing "Best of" lists, so feel free to comment or make your own lists below.

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

Best and Top 5 Restaurants in Singapore

As I continue my very belated "Best of" Lists, we would like to present our choices for best Singapore restaurants today.

Bear in mind that this list, like all lists, is very subjective and is only reflective on Pauline and my thoughts and views of the food places here.
